Exclusive: Turnbull & Asser appoints Becky French as new creative director

Her fresh direction is set to develop both the design and visual identity of the iconic British shirtmaker. Here’s all you need to know...

Breaking news for all bespoke shirt lovers: Turnbull & Asser has appointed a fresh creative director. Having previously served at Ralph Lauren’s Purple Label, Aquascutum, Paul Smith and Marwood, Becky French is now going to be heading up the collections for our favourite British shirtmaker. The announcement marks an exciting shift for the brand, because French is determined to develop its identity through a sustainable design lens.

Since establishing itself in 1885, Turnbull & Asser has grown to be the go-to business for the finest quality shirts. One swift look across its clientele history is proof it is the place to go for discerning gentlemen: Sir Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, Sean Connery (as Mr James Bond) and even Pablo Picasso have sported the brand’s designs. Let’s not forget His Royal Highness either: as soon as Prince Charles was granted the power of bestowing it, his first issue was for Turnbull & Asser. This is the English shirtmaker and, with its latest appointment, its formalwear is more desirable than ever.

French made quite the impression on the brand when joining last year as head of design. She had a vision to increase its dedication to sustainability so, in her new role as creative director, she’s set to ensure a positive contribution to the environment. Fortunately, we won’t be impatiently waiting for new product arrivals, because her first collection for Autumn/Winter 2019 has just dropped. Safe to say, she will continue to serve us some seriously stylish garments.

Speaking of her appointment, Becky French says, “Turnbull & Asser has such a rich history and reputation as the leading luxury British shirtmaker. It is a pleasure to be a part of the evolution of Turnbull & Asser and to further develop the ready-to-wear, made-to-measure and bespoke shirt lines, along with a full lifestyle collection. We hope to speak to our existing customers, but also invite a new audience to walk through the doors of our stores in London and New York.”
