Three style lessons we learned from the Boss SS20 show

The biggest one? We don’t want summer to go anywhere...

Boss is well known for turning out some of the most beautiful tailoring this side of the Italian peninsula, but the brand’s SS20 show – mounted earlier this week – had some important style lessons up its sleeve too. Here, our Style Director reveals a few of the ones that got his sartorial sense tingling.

1. White suits are going to be big news come spring

Ingo Wilts at Boss is a master at cutting a perfect white suit, this elegant double-breasted number being a case in point. When it comes to wearing a white suit the key is to keep the rest of your look lowkey and simple. A shirt and tie would make you look like a waiter, so opt for a tonal vest beneath it in summer and something knitted and chunky beneath it in winter.

2. If you’re going to buy just one item, make it a leather trench

There were a wide array of excellent leather trench coats in show in Milan, but this red number by Wilts for Boss was easily our favourite. Bold, bright and ultra supple, this leather trench will see you through all weathers in style. Though red is not an easy colour to wear, done right (like this) it can shine. “Red is the great clarifier: bright, cleansing and revealing,” said famed fashion writer Diana Vreeland. “It makes all other colours beautiful.”

3. Post-punk tailoring is back

Somewhere between David Bowie’s Young Americans era and Joy Division's Ian Curtis, the suits on show at Boss were cut close yet roomy. This lemon-yellow number was our particular favourite, but it was the fact that said suits came teamed with sneaker-esque lace-ups, small collar shirts and string spaghetti ties that really caught our attention. The lesson? Wear your ties thin and your suits bright come spring.
